History & meaning
Ó Súileabháin means “descendant of Súileabhán”, and that ancestor’s name is where the argument starts. Súil, eye, is secure. The rest is not: one reading attaches dubh, black, and produces “dark-eyed”, another parses it as “one-eyed”, and a third has been argued for “hawk-eyed”. Irish scholarship has never settled it, so a site that tells you Sullivan definitely means one thing is telling you more than anyone knows.
The sept began in Tipperary and was pushed southwest after the Norman invasion, into the mountains and inlets of Beara, Bantry and Kerry, where the name is still thickest. Its most famous moment came in the winter of 1602. After Dunboy fell, Donal Cam O’Sullivan Beare marched roughly a thousand followers three hundred miles north to Leitrim through hostile country; by tradition thirty-five of them arrived. Emigration then made Sullivan an American surname on a huge scale, and American parents eventually did what they do with Irish surnames and moved it to the front.
