History & meaning
Khorenatsi's account gives Hayk a giant's build and an archer's patience. Descended from Noah through Japheth and Togarmah, he refuses to serve Bel, the tyrant of Babylon, and walks his household north to the highlands around Ararat. Bel follows with an army; Hayk kills him with a single arrow from a long bow, and the survivors scatter. Armenian tradition dates the battle to 2492 BC and has counted its calendar from that year ever since.
What lifts the story above folklore is what hangs off it. Armenians do not call themselves Armenians. They are hay, plural hayer, living in Hayastan, and the tradition explains every one of those words as descent from this one man. Historical linguists generally reverse the arrow and connect hay to Bronze Age names for the region rather than to a person, which is the sober reading. Either way the given name and the nation are the same word, a claim scarcely any other name on this site can make.
Why parents choose it
Four letters, one beat, and no ambiguity about where the family comes from. Hayk also survives emigration unusually well: it needs no respelling, contains no sound English lacks, and lands on the familiar syllable HIKE. Families in the western diaspora often use Haig for the same reasons, and the two are simply spellings of one name.
