History & meaning
The word is Greek and the history is Mediterranean. Armenians who fled the Seljuk conquest of the highlands built a second Armenia on the coastal plain of Cilicia, in what is now southern Turkey, and its ruling Rubenid house took the Greek lion-name as a dynastic marker. Levon I inherited a principality and left a kingdom: crowned at Tarsus in a ceremony recognised by both the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy, he pulled Cilicia into the world of the crusader states, minted his own coinage and gave Genoese and Venetian merchants a foothold in his ports. Four more kings named Levon followed him, down to Levon V, who lost the kingdom to the Mamluks in 1375 — the last independent Armenian state until 1918.
That royal weight is why Levon never became a quiet name. In the modern republic it belongs to Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the philologist who became independent Armenia's first president in 1991, and to Levon Aronian, for years one of the strongest chess players in the world and a national figure in a country where chess is taught in primary schools. Non-Armenians know the sound from Elton John's 1971 song "Levon", and from the drummer of The Band, who was born Mark Lavon Helm in Arkansas and went by Levon — a coincidence of spelling rather than an Armenian connection.
Why parents choose it
It is Armenian without being difficult. English speakers read it correctly at first sight, it has an obvious meaning, and it sits next to Leo on a class register without disappearing into it. For diaspora families that combination is rare and valuable.
