Illia
The first church ever named in Kyiv was St Elijah's, and the prophet has been at home in Ukraine ever since — close enough to the old thunder god that villagers credited him with the summer storms. Illia is his name in Ukrainian; Ilya is the Russian one.

History & meaning
The Hebrew name is a declaration rather than a description: my God is Yahweh, which is precisely the argument the prophet has with the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel. He never dies in the text — a chariot of fire takes him up in a whirlwind — and that image did most of the work when the name travelled. Greek turned Eliyahu into Ēlias, Church Slavonic into Iliya, and Ukrainian into Illia, with the soft doubled l that English speakers usually need to hear before they can say. The Russian form of the same prophet is Ilya, a separate name in a separate language.
Kyiv's oldest documented church belonged to him. The Primary Chronicle copies out the Rus treaty with Byzantium of 944, and notes that the Christians in Prince Ihor's retinue swore their half of it in the church of St Elijah — two generations before Volodymyr baptised the state. Folk practice then gave the prophet the sky. Illia's day on 2 August marks the hinge of the Ukrainian summer, after which, the saying goes, the water in the river turns cold, and the thunder that rolls around it was long explained as the prophet driving his fiery chariot overhead, a job the pre-Christian Perun had held before him.

Short, ancient and instantly Ukrainian, with Elijah standing by as the English equivalent. Parents who want a biblical name that has not been through the American top ten tend to land here.

Famous Illias
Illia Zabarnyi has anchored Ukraine's defence since his teens, at Dynamo Kyiv and then in the Premier League. The painter known in English as Ilya Repin, born at Chuhuiv in the Kharkiv region in 1844, is Illia Riepin in Ukrainian, and his Zaporozhian Cossacks Writing a Letter is one of the most reproduced pictures in eastern Europe. Illia Marchenko carried the name through a decade on the professional tennis tour.
