History & meaning
Hawaiian does not have one word for water. Kai is the sea and everything salt about it, including the tide and the current; wai is fresh water, the kind that runs in a valley and keeps people alive. The distinction is load-bearing in the language. Waiwai, fresh water said twice, is the word for wealth and property, and the old land divisions called ahupuaʻa were cut in wedges from the mountain to the reef so that each community held both kinds. Kekai is the salt half of that pair with the definite article in front, formed the way Keanu explains.
Because the noun stands up perfectly well on its own, Hawaii uses both forms. Kai has gone global, helped by sounding native in half a dozen unrelated languages, while Kekai has stayed close to home and stayed unambiguously Hawaiian. It is also widespread as a family name: Albert "Rabbit" Kekai, who died in 2016 at ninety-five, was one of the last of the original Waikīkī beachboys and a fixture of twentieth-century surfing, and for a great many people that surname is where the word was first met.
Why parents choose it
Two syllables, no spelling trouble, and a meaning nobody needs explained twice. For families with island ties it does something Kai cannot: it says which ocean, and which language. Parents who like Kai but find it everywhere often land here after discovering that the longer form was available the whole time.
