History & meaning
Laurentius was a deacon of Rome, killed in the persecution of 258, and remembered in legend for the gridiron and for the joke he is said to have made on it. His cult spread across Latin Europe faster than almost any other, and it reached Finland with the church itself, in the wake of Swedish rule from the twelfth century onward. Medieval Finland dedicated an unusual number of its stone churches to him; the parish churches at Lohja and at Vantaa still carry his name.
Finnish had no use for the tail of Laurentius. It kept the first foot, closed it on a vowel and stopped: Lauri. Then it kept going, because Finnish short forms tend to leave home — Lassi and Lasse both broke off Lauri and are now names parents choose on their own terms. The 10th of August, Lauri's day, mattered in the farming year as well as the church year, falling at the turn of the harvest, and the name spread through the countryside until it was as plain as a name in Finnish can get. Unlike Toivo or Vesa, which are Finnish words a speaker understands on sight, Lauri means nothing at all in Finnish. It has simply been there so long that nobody notices it was ever an import.
Why parents choose it
It is the rare name that is simultaneously ancient, ordinary and still being given: Finland has never had to revive Lauri because it never stopped. Abroad it reads as a fresher alternative to Lawrence, though English speakers should know the first syllable rhymes with "how", not with "law".

Lauri Markkanen, born in 1997, is the most visible Finn in world sport: an NBA forward who was named an All-Star and Most Improved Player in the same 2023 season. Lauri Kristian Relander served as Finland's second president, from 1925 to 1931, in the awkward first decade of the republic. Lauri Ylönen has fronted The Rasmus since he was a teenager and wrote In the Shadows, which in 2003 became a genuine international hit for a Finnish band.
