History & meaning
남 is most often 南, south. Direction characters are a small but real strand in East Asian naming — 東 east appears too, 南 more so — and they usually point at an ancestral place rather than a compass reading. A few families write 男 instead, male or son, and a few choose 楠, the camphor tree. The second syllable is 俊, talented or outstanding, the same character that ends Minjun and opens Junho. So one Namjoon is a talent from the south, another an outstanding son; the register holds the answer and the sound gives nothing away.
Choosing those characters is less free than it sounds. South Korea's Supreme Court publishes an official list of hanja approved for use in personal names, and a character outside it cannot be entered on the family register however handsome its meaning — the list has been extended several times, and each revision quietly changes what parents are allowed to write. Namjoon itself has never been a registry favourite in Korea; it reads slightly formal, a little serious, the sort of name that suits an eldest son. Why parents choose it
Honesty first: most non-Korean families considering this name are considering it because of BTS, and that association is total and unlikely to fade soon. Taken on its own terms, though, it is a solid, slightly old-fashioned Korean name with a strong second character and a first syllable that English speakers handle without difficulty.

Famous Namjoons
Kim Nam-joon leads BTS as RM, writes or co-writes most of the group's lyrics, and addressed the United Nations General Assembly on their behalf in 2018. He is, for practical purposes, the name's entire public presence: beyond him Namjoon is quiet, borne by men who are not famous. Few names of any language are so thoroughly represented by one person.
Consider instead
Seokjin is a real Korean name of the same vintage and, as it happens, another BTS given name. Junho keeps the 俊 and loses the formality. Eunwoo is softer and much more current in Korea.
