Suren
Suren is not a word so much as a dynasty. It belonged to one of the seven great feudal houses of Parthian Iran, and Armenian took it over along with much of the rest of that world.

History & meaning
The House of Suren held the hereditary right to place the crown on an Arsacid king's head, ruled its own territory in the east of the empire, and outlasted the dynasty it served. Its most famous member is a man whose personal name nobody knows: the commander the Romans called Surena, who in 53 BC surrounded seven legions at Carrhae with horse archers and armoured cavalry and destroyed them, killing Crassus and taking the eagles. Roman writers recorded the family name and never learned the individual one, so the name that survives is the house's.
Armenia absorbed this world wholesale. The Arsacids ruled Armenia as well as Iran, and the Iranian nobility left a permanent naming layer there alongside Arshak, Artashes and Tigran. The connection runs deeper than fashion: Armenian tradition, following the historian Agathangelos, makes Gregory the Illuminator a son of Anak the Parthian, of the Suren-Pahlav branch of this very family, which puts the founder of the Armenian church — see Grigor — inside the same lineage. Suren therefore sits on the pre-Christian, aristocratic side of the Armenian register rather than the saintly one.
Why parents choose it
It sounds ancient without sounding invented, and it belongs to a history Armenians and Iranians share rather than dispute. Practically, it is two open syllables that no English speaker mangles, and it shortens naturally to Suro at home.

Famous Surens
Suren Spandaryan (1882–1916) was a Bolshevik organiser and writer close to Lenin, and one of the better-known Armenian revolutionaries of his generation. Souren Melikian, born in Tehran to an Armenian family, spent decades as the art-market critic of the International Herald Tribune and is a leading authority on Islamic art.
