History & meaning
Most Hebrew names are a sentence with God in it. Joel is unusual because it is nothing but God, twice. Hebrew theophoric names normally attach one divine element to a verb or a noun: Jonathan is Yah gave, Joshua is Yah is salvation, Daniel is God is my judge, Michael asks who is like God. Joel drops the verb entirely and simply sets the two names for the divine side by side — Yo, the clipped form of YHWH that also opens Josiah, and El, the ancient Semitic term that closes Samuel and Gabriel. Read literally it is a statement: Yahweh is God. Turn it round and you get Elijah, Eliyahu, the same two elements in the other order.
The prophet Joel, son of Pethuel, wrote three chapters about a locust plague and what to make of it, and one passage outlived the rest: the promise that God will pour out his spirit on all flesh, so that old men dream dreams and young men see visions. Peter quotes it at Pentecost in Acts 2, which fixed the book in Christian memory. There are more than a dozen other Joels scattered through the Hebrew Bible, mostly in genealogies. English families took the name up after the Reformation alongside Caleb and Silas, and it has been quietly in use in the English-speaking world ever since.
Why parents choose it
Joel has never been fashionable, which is its own recommendation. It is short, spelled the way it sounds, recognised everywhere in the West, and carries no baggage from any particular decade. Very few names manage to be biblical, international and unremarkable in the best sense all at once.

Joel Coen has directed, with his brother Ethan, Fargo and No Country for Old Men, which brought them Academy Awards for writing, directing and producing. Joel Embiid was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 2023. Joel Grey won both a Tony and an Academy Award for playing the Emcee in Cabaret. The most famous Joel of all, Billy Joel, carries it as a surname rather than a first name.
